Agnogenic myeloid metaplasia with extramedullary hematopoiesis and fibrosis in the lung. Report of two cases.
Agnogenic myeloid metaplasia (AMM) is a chronic hematologic disorder with a long clinical course, characteristically accompanied by extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) in various organs, most commonly the spleen and liver. We describe two cases of AMM with clinically significant and ultimately fatal EMH and associated fibrosis in the lung and pleura. The literature on AMM and EMH involving the l...

متن کاملThe Role of Atoh1 in Mucous Cell Metaplasia
A key issue in otitis media is mucous cell metaplasia which is responsible for mucous hypersecretion and persistence of the disease. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of mucous cell metaplasia in otitis media. Numerous studies of intestinal epithelial homeostasis have shown that Atonal homolog 1 (Atoh1), a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, is essential fo...
متن کاملImmunogenetic programs for viral induction of mucous cell metaplasia.
Mucous secretions are frequently implicated in the morbidity and mortality associated with respiratory illness and airway disease, but we still do not understand precisely how these secretions develop or how to control them. A likely possibility is that the increased mucus is a consequence of overproduction and subsequent secretion in the setting of mucous cell metaplasia. In that regard, airwa...
متن کاملNotch signaling promotes airway mucous metaplasia and inhibits alveolar development.
The airways are conduits that transport atmospheric oxygen to the distal alveolus. Normally, airway mucous cells are rare. However, diseases of the airway are often characterized by mucous metaplasia, in which there are dramatic increases in mucous cell numbers. As the Notch pathway is known to regulate cell fate in many contexts, we misexpressed the active intracellular domain of the mouse Not...
